I know what you’re thinking: what the heck is New Beer’s Eve? If you like beer, and you like printers, read on.
Next month, SEDO is shamelessly importing an American tradition into the British Isles: we’re hosting a New Beer’s Eve event to celebrate the end of prohibition. In America, the celebration commemorates April 6th, 1933, the eve of when it became legal to sell beer again across the country. We, however, will be celebrating the end of prohibition in print – as the latest print technology is lifting all the constraints on productivity from the print room.
Prohibition was a time of terrible hardship. Coinciding with the Great Depression, it meant that Americans couldn’t even turn to beer to drown their sorrows. It was also the era of the speakeasy – there were 100,000 in New York alone – and clandestine breweries and stills. Gangsters controlled the black market for alcohol, until eventually the American Government realised it was one social experiment that was never going to work. The repeal of Prohibition was greeted with widespread celebrations, which continue to this day with the unofficial holiday of New Beer’s Eve.
Introducing the SEDO Brewery
For one day only, Covent Garden’s unique Icetank is being transformed into the SEDO Brewery. There will be beer, naturally, because it’s a celebration. But there’ll also be some prime pieces of printing kit on display.
